Book Review – Kinley Dorji

Yuval Noah Harari is an Israeli Author, Historian and Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Earlier he has also authored two other best selling books, SAPIENS: A Brief History of Humankind and HOMO DEUS: A brief History of Tomorrow.

As the title suggests, the book is divided into twenty one chapter with each distinct lessons clubbed under the subtopics: The Technological Challenge, The Political Challenge, Despair and Hope, Truth, and Resilience.

This book provokes the reader to visualize a kind of future that human being might experience based on the twenty one complex contemporary challenges that confronts the 21st Century. In part one, the author discusses on how the rapid technological advancements such as artificial intelligence, big data algorithms and bio-engineering could change the basic aspects of human world. While the other parts highlights the political, social and existential challenges that impacts the day to day lives of modern human beings.

The book ends with a chapter on meditation which the author shares his personal experiences on how the practice of Vipassana helped him to study his own mind and human being in general. The practice of Vipassana he says ” It is not an escape from reality. Rather it is getting in touch with reality”.

What I enjoyed most about this book is the way in which the author narrates the contemporary issues clearly and exclusively. Author uses simple language, day to day examples and personal anecdotes for the readers to relate to the issues.
