ISIS:The State of Terror

Jessica Stern and J.M. Berger, two of America’s leading experts on violent extremism and terrorism explain the genesis, evolution, and implications of today’s most barbaric jihadist army, Islamic State and how we can fight it.

ISIS came known to the public in year 2014 due its brutality and extremist mind. ISIS has leveraged into an empire of death in Iraq and Syria, and an international network that is rapidly expanding in the Middle East, North Africa and around the world. ISIS-The state of terror frights with the deadly introduction of the 5-minute video must be one of the most macabre ever made. On the surface, the ISIS is fighting an insurgency against the Iraqi and Syrian governments. It is also the de facto ruler in parts of both countries. The main strength of the book and its most original contributions come in the sections on ISIS’ exploitation of social media. Rather than simply stating the obvious that ‘ISIS is on social media and is good at it’ (a non-story), the authors explore in detail the manipulation techniques used, with a noteworthy account on the development of the “Dawn of Glad Tidings” application created by a Palestinian and designed to tweet out links to official ISIS media releases and promote hashtags ISIS wanted to use. The most notable result of this phenomenon was to scare Iraqis in the immediate aftermath of the fall of Mosul with threats of an ISIS march on Baghdad to conquer the capital: qadimun ya Baghdad, as one of the Arabic slogans went.

While this book gives a brief ideologies and innovation used by the group to recruit unprecedented numbers of westerners through its sophisticated use of social media. As it lays out what our next move–as a country, as a government, as the world should be, it offers a vital assessment of the future of counterterrorism and countering violent extremism. The book is mostly focusing on the use of the social media by the ISIS to captive the mind of the innocent ones while the detail investigation on their armed forces, capacity and their strength is not mentioned briefly in the book. The book is more generalized on the viral videos and news on the internet without a statistical fact on further studies made on their leaders and their background.
