Attitude: What Every Leader Needs to Know

The New York Times bestselling author and leadership expert John C. Maxwell in his book titled ‘ATTITUDE’ talks about what every leader needs to know to be a successful person and a good leader. It is a must read book for everyone who aspires to be a leader. In his book, author takes us through his invaluable experiences and stories and tells us what a person should master in, to be a real successful person in life. He recognizes that if a leader expects to achieve success, the attitudes of the people they lead should not be ignored. Attitude can make or break you he says. He expresses that good attitudes among players do not guarantee a team’s success, but bad attitudes guarantee its failure.

The most interesting thing I found in his book is his equation of abilities, attitudes and results. It shows that only talent is not enough. His equation includes:

Great Talent + Rotten Attitudes = Bad Team
Great Talent + Bad Attitudes = Average Team
Great Talent + Average Attitudes = Good Team
Great Talent + Good Attitudes = Great Team

He also uncovers that the attitude is contagious. When a leader or a team member displays a strong work ethics and begins to have positive impact to the team, others begin to imitate them. People become inspired by their leader or peers and tend to adopt their attitudes. However, he warns that bad attitudes compound faster than the good ones. He reveals the research findings of the Stanford Research Institute, which discovered that the money you make is determined by only 12.5% by knowledge and 87.5% by your ability to deal with people. This shows the greater impact of attitude for the success in any endeavor.

The main take away from this book is ‘the attitude is always a PLAYER on your team.’ The attitude and the potential go hand in hand and it is the attitude that determines how far one can go on the life’s successful journey.
It is worth reading this book not only to build the right attitude but also to excel as a successful person and a good leader.
